Some of the moving and courageous stories gathered as part of our ongoing project, Stories of Strength: Romford is Strong , are now being celebrated in the form of an exhibition at Daniel’s View Gallery in Romford at The Mercury. The free exhibition is on until 22nd October – but the collection of community memories will not stop there with Havering Changing visiting more towns across the borough.

Some of the stories were gathered on Saturday 3rd October when Havering Changing were on the look-out for local Stories of Strength; interviewed by Charmaine Childs from Strong Lady Productions in the middle of a bustling Mercury shopping centre, local people were asked to think back on the last time they felt strong. The results were testament to the resilience and strength of the people of Havering.

The inspiring stories collected from the day ranged from feeling strong after surviving illness, resolving a bullying situation at work, and when eventually learning English as a second language.

“People do not always immediately feel that they are a strong person when you first ask, but after a short conversation it is really easy to get the conversation and examples flowing” says Charmaine. “A lot of the time people want to share this but feel too humble to”.

“We are really excited to meet people in Havering and get to know them. Stories of Strength is an amazing way to celebrate local people overcoming challenges and we want to showcase the strength of Havering’s communities.” says James Jackson, Project Director of Havering Changing.
