Love Birds – Street Theatre in Romford town centre!
Visitors to Romford town centre were treated to surprise performances of Love Birds: A Pigeon’s Tale on Sunday 12th September.
The first performance took place at the Brewery, where Bessy the pigeon and her friends warmly welcomed the audience. The free performance attracted passing families who took time out of their morning to enjoy the street theatre. The Liberty was the next performance location, and as Bessy and friends arrived, a curious crowd had already started to gather ready for the show to begin.
Adults and children alike were enchanted by the story: thanks to her evil uncle’s curse, Bessy’s flock would be doomed if she did not find true love by midnight on her 18th birthday. The tale unravelled through music and drama, with actor-musicians Grace Firth, Melker Nilsson and Liam Scarth being joined by a talented community chorus.
The third and final show of the day brought together an audience in Romford Marketplace. Bessy and friends were met with laughter, cheers and applause, and at each show brave audience members even volunteered to put on a dazzling parakeet costume, performing a ‘mating dance’ that won Bessy’s heart every time.
Hundreds of people attended across the three shows, commenting that it was a very uplifting experience, and that they would love to see more performances in Romford.
Love Birds is the work of Two Left Feet Theatre Company, and forms part of Havering Changing’s Festival of Performance in Romford town centre. The show was written & directed by Patrick O’Sullivan, with songs and music by Steven Markwick.
